This autumn, I’ve been craving homemade pies more than ever.

Do you ever make pies at home?

The other day, I was craving apple pie.
Since store-bought pies can contain lots of additives and be overly sweet,
I decided to make my own and headed to the supermarket to buy some puff pastry sheets.

But when I checked the ingredients, I was shocked…
Emulsifiers, flavorings, colorings, shortening…
Most of the options were packed with additives and ingredients I prefer to avoid.

I wanted a puff pastry sheet with simple ingredients and no additives,
especially since my child would be eating it too!

So I started looking, and to my surprise, I found some options available at stores I could easily visit.

In this article, I’ll share 4 additive-free puff pastry sheets you can buy in Japan.
I hope this guide helps inspire your next homemade pie!

4 Recommended Additive-Free Puff Pastry Sheets

1. OK Store – 100% Butter Puff Pastry Sheets

My top recommendation!

Ingredients: Wheat flour, butter, salt

Key features:

  • Made with 100% New Zealand butter, these pastry sheets have a subtly sweet flavor and bake up nice and crispy.
  • Around ¥600 for a pack of 4, making them an affordable option.
  • An OK Store original product, so they’re a great choice if you have an OK Store nearby!

These sheets are the most affordable price ones I found. And they still taste very good so I love them!

2. KALDI – Bellamy’s Frozen Puff Pastry Sheets

Ingredients: Wheat flour, butter, salt

Key features:

  • Also made with 100% New Zealand butter.
  • A well-known choice among additive-free puff pastry sheets and a popular product at KALDI.
  • Also available on Amazon and Rakuten.

It’s a bit more expensive than OK store’s pastry sheets. But they’re still very popular!

Review: I Tried Baking with Them!

I used OK Store’s additive-free puff pastry sheets to make an apple pie.

Since these pastry sheets don’t contain emulsifiers or stabilizers,
they soften and start to melt quickly when handled at room temperature.

My tip: Once you’ve finished working with the pastry, put it straight back in the fridge.

The result? A beautifully crispy apple pie!

The rich, fragrant flavor of the butter really came through, and the pie turned out delicious.
My husband loved it so much that he said he wanted to bake and eat the pastry on its own! 😂
My one-year-old daughter also kept asking for more apple pie!

Final Thoughts of Better Choices.

Additive-free puff pastry sheets can be surprisingly hard to find at regular supermarkets,
but you can get them at stores like OK Store and KALDI.

This autumn, I’m looking forward to making lots of delicious pies with additive-free puff pastry and enjoying them with my family!

I hope this guide helps you find the right puff pastry sheets for your next baking adventure.
