Do you care about the chemicals used in household products?

Have you ever thought about the additives and chemicals in the everyday products you use?

After having my child, I started noticing that many household products also contain various chemicals, and I became more conscious about what I use at home.

If you have children or are concerned about skin irritation, you probably want to be a little more careful about the products you use every day, too.

Today, I’d like to introduce some clean dish soaps that you can buy in Japan, along with my personal experience using them.

What is a “Clean Dish Soap”?

Japanese dish soaps are known for producing lots of foam and having strong cleaning power.

At the same time, most of those products contain ingredients such as synthetic surfactants, which may raise concerns about their effects on your skin and the environment.

Synthetic surfactants can be made from petroleum and other materials, and they are useful ingredients that help remove grease and oil effectively.
Of course, it’s convenient when a dish soap creates lots of foam and removes grease easily. However, if dishes aren’t rinsed thoroughly, some detergent residue may remain on them.
Stronger cleaning formulas can also be more irritating or drying to your hands.

There are also concerns about the environmental impact of wastewater containing these detergent ingredients.

Thinking about all of this made me want to choose dish soaps with simpler ingredients that are more considerate of my hands and the environment, while also giving me peace of mind in case any residue were to remain on my dishes.

Let’s take a look at 5 dish soaps that are made without petroleum-derived synthetic surfactants and use soap-based or plant-derived ingredients, with a focus on being gentler on your hands and the environment.

5 Clean Dish Soaps in Japan

Check out the Quick Comparison Table for a quick overview of each product!

MIYOSHI Additive-Free Pure Dish Soap

A liquid dish soap made with 100% pure soap as its cleansing ingredient,
designed to be gentle on your hands and the environment.

Ingredients:
Pure soap (28% potassium fatty acid salts), water, potassium rapeseed fatty acid, potassium palm kernel fatty acid

Features:

  • Free from synthetic surfactants, fragrances, colorants, and preservatives
  • Pure soap made from natural ingredients such as rapeseed oil and palm oil
  • Gentle on your hands

My thoughts:
It creates fine, soft foam and rinses off quickly. Since it’s fragrance-free, there’s no lingering scent on your dishes.
It doesn’t have the same strong cleaning power as conventional dish detergents, but it removes everyday grease and oil without any problems.
I’d recommend it if you’re concerned about dry or irritated hands.
Since it’s fragrance-free, it’s also convenient for washing baby bottles and toys.

Happy Elephant Vegetable & Dishwashing Detergent – Grapefruit

A 100% non-petroleum-based, additive-free dish soap containing “sophorolipid,”
a natural cleansing ingredient produced through yeast fermentation.

Ingredients:
Surfactants (11%: alkyl polyglucoside, sodium alkyl ether sulfate, sophorolipid), ethanol (stabilizer), citrate salts (stabilizer), grapefruit oil (fragrance), citric acid (pH adjuster), hydroxypropyl guar gum (thickener)

Features:

  • Uses 100% plant-based ingredients along with “sophorolipid,” a natural cleansing ingredient produced through yeast fermentation
  • Free from petroleum-based synthetic surfactants, synthetic fragrances, and colorants
  • Can be used not only for dishes and cooking utensils, but also for washing fruits and vegetables
  • Designed with the environment in mind and breaks down through microorganisms after entering wastewater
  • Scented with 100% natural grapefruit essential oil

My thoughts:
The foam feels light and airy, and it disappears quickly when rinsed, making it very easy to rinse off.
The formula has a watery texture, which makes it easy to use when washing vegetables without leaving a slippery feeling. It also removes grease effectively.
The grapefruit scent is fresh and refreshing, but I don’t notice any lingering fragrance on dishes after washing.
I’d recommend it if you enjoy a fresh citrus scent while doing the dishes.

Yashinomi Dishwashing Detergent

A fragrance-free dish soap made with plant-based cleansing ingredients derived from palm,
designed to be gentle on your skin and the environment.

Ingredients:
Surfactants (16%: sodium alkyl ether sulfate, fatty acid alkanolamide)

Features:

  • Dermatologically tested for skin irritation and designed with sensitive hands in mind.
  • Fragrance-free and colorant-free, with no detergent scent left on your dishes.
  • Highly biodegradable and quickly breaks down into water and carbon dioxide through microorganisms.
  • Can also be used to wash fruits and vegetables, as well as dishes and cooking utensils.

My thoughts:
Because it’s designed to be gentle on your hands, the cleaning power and foam are relatively mild.
For dishes with heavy grease, I recommend washing them in a couple of rounds rather than trying to remove everything at once.
Since it’s fragrance-free, I also like that I don’t have to worry about any lingering scent when washing vegetables or dishes.
The pump bottle is another convenient feature. You can simply leave it by the sink and dispense the soap with one hand!

Yashinomi Premium Power

A concentrated dish soap that maintains the gentle qualities of the original Yashinomi formula
while offering stronger cleaning power and more foam for greasy dishes.

Ingredients:
Surfactants (26%: sodium alkyl ether sulfate, alkyl betaine), cleaning aids, stabilizers

Features:

  • Strong cleaning power and rich foam, making it effective even on heavy grease.
  • Designed to be gentle on your hands while effectively removing dirt.
  • Fragrance-free and colorant-free, with no lingering scent on your dishes.
  • Uses palm-derived cleansing ingredients and supports environmental conservation in Borneo.

My thoughts:
It has stronger cleaning power than the regular Yashinomi dish soap and does a great job removing grease!
Compared with the original Yashinomi, I do notice that my hands feel slightly drier after using it.
However, compared with conventional dish detergents, it still feels much gentler on my hands.
I’d recommend it if you want a balance between strong cleaning power and gentleness on your hands.

arau. Kitchen & Dish Soap

A dish soap made with 100% plant-based pure soap,
designed to be gentle on your hands and the environment.

Ingredients:
Pure soap (30% potassium fatty acid salts)

Features:

  • Made with 100% plant-based pure soap and free from synthetic surfactants, fragrances, colorants, and preservatives.
  • Contains moisturizing plant extracts, including perilla leaf and aloe extracts.
  • Suitable for washing baby dishes, pacifiers, toys, and other baby items.

My thoughts:
It produces rich foam and easily removes sticky grease from things like plastic lunch boxes.
The foam also rinses away quickly, making it easy to wash off.
It has a subtle natural herb scent from lavender and spearmint, which gives a fresh and pleasant feeling while doing the dishes.
I’d recommend it if you want to be gentle on your hands while enjoying a relaxing, natural herbal scent as you wash the dishes.
